Dog Barking

Dog Barking

There is nothing quite as annoying in a quiet neighborhood as a dog that continues to bark all day. There is always a reason why a dog will continue to bark and more often than not it is related to boredom.

Have your neighbors been complaining that your dog is barking when you’re away?

Typically, Golden Retrievers do not have a problem with barking, but they will bark if bored or lonely.

An article published in a recent issue of Canine Times (you can subscribe to this free e-zine by going to: http://www.cfnaonline.com/caninetimes/) states that, “The Association of Pet Behavior Counselors condemns the widespread use of devices which deliver electric shocks to dogs for the purpose of training or curing behavior problems,”The article later states that, “Only in a handful of cases, where all else has been tried and failed, and when the condition is potentially life-threatening, can the use of such devices ever be justified, according to the association, and, only then, in the hands of an experienced behavioral specialist who is capable of accurate timing.” HHHMMMMM… if the electronic collar is truly cruel and inhumane… WHY would they advocate ONLY using it in cases where everything else has already been tried? This is ridiculous.

What Industry Insider’s Know About
Electronic Bark Collars
By Adam G. Katz

Here’s the deal:   You’ve got a dog that just keeps barking when you leave him in his kennel run or in the back yard.  You’ve already exercised him and you know that he’s not barking at anything in specific.  Let’s face it:  Some times dogs just bark because it’s fun.  And then it becomes a habit.  And then your neighbors start complaining.   Even if you correct the dog when you’re home, your dog is smart enough to learn that he doesn’t get corrected for barking when you leave for work.  And that’s where the bark collar comes in.

Dear Mr. Katz,

I have a two year-old female Boxer named Amber and a six year-old female St. Bernard named Crystal. My question is regarding the Boxer, Amber. Whenever my husband and I sit down to eat dinner, watch TV, or when company comes over, she incessantly barks at us. She doesn’t want to play with her toys and nothing can distract her from this barking. We try to correct her in a deep tone, but she only gets crazier; i.e.. jumping up, biting our clothes. From reading your book, it seems that she needs a motivational correction, such as her training collar. As of now, we do not leave it on her, except for when she is being walked. Should she be wearing the collar when we are home and she’s in the house at all times? Can you please make any suggestions to correct this behavior so when we want to relax or have guests over, it’s pleasant. She gets plenty of exercise and tons of attention. I’m not sure what to do. Thanks in advance!!
