Common Mistakes When Trying to Stop a Dog From Chewing
Let’s face it, all dogs chew. Well, at least all puppies do. But eventually, those puppies grow up into a fully-grown, mature dog. But some dogs are different, they grow up, but they still constantly resort to that childish chewing behaviors that can destroy your house. Now the only way to stop them is to learn how to stop a dog from chewing.
Do you know why your dog chews, though? Most likely, it’s because you made one of these mistakes:
- Dog Training Mistake #1: Somewhere along the line, you may have accidentally given your dog the impression that it is ok to chew your stuff. Maybe it was something small, like giving him an old shoe to chew, but nonetheless it had a big effect on your dog, letting him think that your stuff is his stuff. You see, your dog can’t see a difference between 30 year old goodwill shoes, and brand new 400 dollar shoes, so he will chew on whichever one he sees first
- Dog Training Mistake #2: Another mistake that you may have made could be not providing your dog with enough toys for himself. Your dog HAS to chew, it’s an innate behavior, but if he has nothing of his own to chew, he will find something of yours!
- Dog Training Mistake #3: Does your dog know that chewing is wrong? If you are unclear with your scolding, he will have no clue what he’s doing wrong. For example, if you go to dinner, and come home to find a house chewed to shreds, and you yell at your dog, he won’t know why you are yelling. You see, he obviously doesn’t see chewing as a bad thing, so if you come in and yell at him for something that happened 30 minutes ago, he won’t know what your talking about.
Have you made any of these big mistakes? Don’t worry, it’s never to late to train your dog to stop chewing. You know that saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks”…yea…you can throw that out the window.
So where can you learn how to train your dog? Well, recently my dog was acting up (I was a new pet owner), so I did some Googling and found a really cool ebook/video/audio course that pretty much taught me everything I know.
