How to Stop Dog From Chewing – The “Right” Way

So your dog likes to chew everything he can get his teeth on. You are not alone, this is a very common problem people have with their dogs. This problem is not only for puppies either, dogs of any age can begin chewing. The most important thing for you to do before beginning to try to solve this problem is to understand why your dog is doing it.

First off you should never hit the dog for any reason, this sill never help to solve any problems. Not only does the dog not understand why he is being hit you could potentially make the problem worse. Now you might be wondering why this could make the problem worse and it is because your dog may be chewing out of fear or anxiety in the first place. Okay now on to some of the things you should be trying.

The first thing you should do is make sure there are some chew toys laying around preferably the ones that you can stuff some treats inside of. If your dog is only teething there is a good chance this will solve the issue. If the chewing is related to anxiety, loneliness, or boredom you have more work to do.

If you actually catch your dog in the act of chewing you should give him a loud “No” and you should give him a chew toy so he knows that is what he should be chewing. You should not yell at the dog after the fact because he is not going to understand why he is being yelled at and you will likely cause him more anxiety which could worsen the problem.

One other thing to keep in mind is when you are going out you should not make a big spectacle of it. You should leave quietly preferably without your dog even noticing this will help to limit his anxiety if his chewing is a result of you not being around. There, don’t you feel bad for smacking him now that you know he was only chewing your nice shoes because he misses you.
